Selection of Thickening Equipment
To select a thickener of a required type and size, it's necessary to perform thickening tests for each specific case. The process of equipment design starts with thickening studies.
TEM Partner specialists have knowledge, experience and all equipment necessary for such studies. The thickener structure combines all contemporary developments in the field of thickening. During design, a special attention is paid to the structure of the feeding system, rake, drive systems and thickener control principles.
It is only possible to determine the thickener operation parameter by performing dynamic tests since static cylinder sedimentation tests do not correctly represent the operation mode of a thickener.
Engineers of TEM Partner perform dynamic thickening studies using a laboratory unit 100 mm in diameter. Thickening studies using a dynamic laboratory unit may be performed both in laboratory conditions and on the customer's site. To perform a series of tests, it's necessary to have a pulp sample containing about 20–25 kg of dry solids.
In the course of the studies, the most efficient flocculant and its consumption are selected, the optimal solids content in thickener feed is determined, and the equipment operation mode required to maintain the required solids content in the thickened product and thickener overflow is determined.
Based on the results of the studies, the thickener operation parameters are determined, its size is selected and process guarantees are provided.
The thickener manufacturing process is controlled by our engineers, which allows to maintain high quality of the products and its compliance with requirements of the ISO 9001 certification system.
TEM Partner service engineers perform supervision of thickener installation on the customer's site and further technical and process maintenance of thickening projects.

- Thickener feed supply system
- The operational parameters of the thickener depend mainly on arrangement of the thickener pulp feeding system and optimal dilution of the pulp. The structure of TEMP Feedwell feeding wells maintains optimal solids content in thickener feed providing efficient flocculation of pulp and its distribution over the tank area.
- The well configuration and volume are customized for each specific project depending on the parameters of pulp to be thickened, which allows to maintain the required operational parameters of a thickener and its high efficiency with optimal flocculant consumption.
- Thickener drive system
TEM Partner uses single planetary reducers on thickeners with a single-span bridge and multi-gear reducers with a central column for large-diameter thickeners. The rake drive uses a low-speed hydraulic motor combined with a high-performance planetary reducer. The rake lifter is fitted with a row of cylinders operating in parallel which lift and descend the drive framework. Rake drives are customized for each specific project and are composed of ready-made components.
A hydraulic drive has a number of advantages as compared to an electromechanical drive:
- A planetary reducer has high torque and a large load potential
- It's possible to accurately measure the torque based on hydraulic pressure
- Three drive protection levels
- Safe rake lifting
- Reversing capability
Several Drive Protection Levels
- The pressure in the hydraulic drive is monitored by a pressure transducer which activates lifting/descending of the rakes.
- The independent pressure relay monitors the system pressure and activates the alarm system and the hydraulic motor relay in case of reaching the higher pressure threshold.
- The final protection level is provided by actuation of the bypass valve in the line guaranteeing that the design torque will not be exceeded.
- Prevention of torque overload during startup or operation.
High-performance TEM Partner drives based on cutting-edge technologies are designed specifically to simplify their maintenance. Standard drives with torque ranging from 1,830 to 6,500 kNm are available.
Thickening Process Control
The TEM Partner thickening process control system is based on the three main circuits:
1. Flocculant feeding control by means of the bed level sensor: sets the optimal flocculant consumption
2. Bed weight control by changing the speed of the thickened product pumps: maintains constant density of the thickened product
3. Automatic rake lifting and descending control by measuring the rake rotation torque: torque exceeding is prevented and wearing of the mechanisms is reduced.
Controlling flocculant consumption and thickened product discharge speed stabilizes the thickening process and maintains constant density of the thickened product while controlling of automatic rake lifting and descending provides three levels of protection and reduces wearing of the mechanisms.
